Welcome to Avondale Primary School
Established in 1961, Avondale Primary School is located on an attractive, well maintained site, close to all amenities, approximately 10 kilometres north-west of Melbourne.
This school is situated in an area surrounded on three sides by the Maribyrnong River. The school has strong links with the local community and supports a range of community activities.
Enrolments have been progressively increasing since the mid 1990s to the current 2017 figure of 363. As a medium sized school we have the benefit of being able to provide a broad curriculum whilst still retaining a personal relationship with every student and family. The school is able to provide a stable environment in which every student feels safe, happy and motivated to learn.
Student achievement is the primary motivation and measure of the school’s success.
Although academic achievement is an important measure of student success, it also includes student participation in a wide range of artistic, sporting, civic and cultural activities as well as the development of self-knowledge and personal values. (See School Philosophy and Values)
Staff and Professional Learning
In 2017 we have 23 teachers and 15 educational support staff employed at this school. The professional development of staff to constantly improve their teaching effectiveness is a key strategy in improving learning outcomes for students. Curriculum planning, sharing good practice, moderation and evaluation are carried out in professional learning teams (PLTs). Opportunities to discuss teaching practice and theory are timetabled weekly.
Avondale Primary School has a current enrolment of 363 students. There are eight classes in the Junior Department and seven classes in the Senior Department.
Each Department has two professional learning teams supported by the school leadership team, specialist teachers and student welfare coordinator.
The school provides a Reading Intervention Teacher and specialist classes are provided in LOTE (Italian), Physical Education and Art. ICT is taught by the classroom teachers.
An active School Council that meets at least eight times each year supported by five sub committees. Parents are encouraged to participate in school governance and policy development.
Avondale students enjoy a range of facilities and resources. The two original school buildings include our administration area, classrooms, a library, multipurpose rooms and meeting rooms. The new building houses the school’s art room and multipurpose room and canteen.
The grounds are secure and comprise garden areas, passive and active recreation areas and an oval. There is a modern adventure playground for junior and senior classes covered by shade sails, a sand pit and student vegetable garden.
